Sydney started sailing at the age of 6, when her parents enrolled her in an Opti learn to sail camp in Virginia. All it took was that first day, and she was hooked. The freedom of being on the water, the challenge and competition of racing, she couldn’t get enough. Even begged her parents to give her all their money and sail for the rest of her life. They said no, but that didn’t stop Sydney from a life on the water.
Sydney quickly started racing the local Opti circuit, throwing the boat on top of the car and taking to the water whenever possible. At age 12, Sydney moved to Pawleys Island, SC where she helped launch a learn to sail program at the South Carolina Maritime Museum and started a team at her new high school. Coaching and racing comes naturally to Sydney. In highschool, she raced the SAISA and C420 circuits, traveling up and down the east coast most summers, and could be found coaching when not racing herself.
Sydney sailed for The George Washington University from 2019 - 2021. After graduating early, she settled into D.C. with a routine of political consulting during the day, coaching high school sailing in the evenings, and racing whatever she could find on the weekends.
This past April, Sydney felt a strong pull towards returning to sailing in a larger way. She quit her job as a Press Secretary in D.C. and took to the water seeking to sharpen her skills, feel that rush, and execute her vision of conquering the 470 class and representing her country in the sport that has been her foundation in life.
